🧀 What Is Umaibo?

Umaibo (“delicious stick”) is one of Japan’s most iconic dagashi—cheap, nostalgic snacks loved by kids and adults alike.
First released in 1979, Umaibo is a long, cylindrical corn puff snack that has been enjoyed for decades thanks to its affordable price — originally 10 yen per stick (now 15 yen).

The classic Cheese and Corn Potage flavors are the most popular, but there have been over 60 varieties so far, including seasonal and regional limited editions.

Almost everyone in Japan has tried Umaibo at least once, making it a true national snack.

In Japan, dagashi refers to inexpensive, fun snacks typically sold for children — and Umaibo is considered the ultimate example of this tradition.

🍽️ What Does Umaibo Taste Like?

Umaibo has a light, crunchy texture with bold, addictive flavors that make it hard to stop at just one.
Each flavor gives a totally different vibe — here are a few must-tries:

  • Corn Potage – sweet, creamy, and super comforting. Kids (and adults!) love this one.
  • Mentai (spicy cod roe) – a little spicy and rich, perfect for those who like stronger flavors or enjoy snacking with drinks.
  • Cheese – smooth, savory, and perfectly balanced. It’s the most classic Umaibo flavor for a reason!
